AIR INK

Air pollution has been the cause of many deaths worldwide. This poison is not only harmful to us but to our nature as well. This poison is being given a new form of Gravity ink where pollution is captured to produce Air-Ink.

In the gravity Lab of Bengaluru. Anirudh Sharma co-founder.

Air-Ink is a form of ink that is made after recycling air pollution you see that air pollution is essentially PM 2.5 these small particulates that go into our lungs.

So what they do is they capture these particulates, extract the carbon content out of them and then confine them as Air-Ink.

Here history is being made by converting pollution to ink.

Come let's ask Anirudh how did this future changing Idea comes to his sharp mind?

They took a candle and put a plate on the candle you see it turning the whole thing black that essential.

They said that how do we harvest the soot into this little, they would say pollution capture system?

So they made a very small electrostatic system they would mix it with very simple day to day solvents like vegetable oil and then they hacked a day to day printer, an inkjet printer remove the cartridge from it and that cartridge was essentially repurposed to print form the ink that they made by that candle soot.

Then his OMG brain was joined by an OMG brain chain after 3 years of hard work, research, trial, and error made a powerful electronic device called kaalink, Which works similar to diesel generators.

A simpler way to understand how kaalink works is the experiment we have done in childhood of attracting small pieces of paper in a comb/scale kaalink works in a very similar fashion.

How kaalink works:-

  • Kaalink is connected to the generator and as soon as it switched on it reduces the exhaust fumes coming out of it and it attracts the black dust which is called soot.
  • The soot is collected in the tray below from which metals and other impurities are removed.
  • The remaining fine powder is treated with different types of solvents to make Air-Ink.

100 grams worth of pollution would translate to approximately 700 to 900 ml worth of ink.

They have made approximately 1000 ltr of Air-Ink until now meaning they have saved 100 kg of polluted carbon from mixing in the air.

Till the time pollution is there we want people to see it as a waste that can be recycled as a resource as well which will motivate people further to adopt this recycling technology.

You're being nature friendly I mean they're cutting down pollution and putting it into art that's like the best way to work on something.

There are more than 1500 people who are actively using Air-Ink for their artwork for their printing and so on.

This team is now working on a device that will capture the pollution from cars and produce more Air-Ink.

According to WHO, the direct and indirect causes of air pollution result in 5 to 6 million deaths in a year.

Even if this technology can curb a very small part of it they will fill useful about it.

  • Kaalink won the Best Product Award from the London Design Museum.
  • Kaalink won the foreign policy Top 100 Global thinkers Award 2016 in Washington DC.
  • Anirudh was named Indian Innovator of the year by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Incomplete combustion of diesel produces carbon particles called soot.
