GOL GUMBAZ

This is the whispering Gallery of Gol Gumbaz, Bijapur.

This is the tomb of Sultan Adil Shah his lover Rambha and his family. But these days it's architecture and sound technology attracts people more than it's history.

This monument's ground floor is famous for the unique echoes and the dome, its upper part, is for the whispering Gallery.

The structure is 168 feet high and due to the special stone interlocking technique. It has no pillars that's why the sound waves travel in a curved linear motion without any interruption and since the tomb's structure is round and the walls are smooth our voices move forward crawling on them and they are reflected before the intensity drops.

such sensitive dome. We are forced to wonder how was a modern sound engineering wonder created in the 17th century. Although the history isn't clear whether it was created deliberately or when the monument was completed with the dome. They discovered that sounds are reflected, they echo and a whispering gallery could be made.

Sultan Ibrahim Shah had a fantastic mausoleum and Sultan Adil Shah wanted his mausoleum to be grander than his father's. That's why, he ordered the famous architect, Yaqut of Dabul to make a mausoleum that was superior.

Today the Gol Gumbaz represents the Deccan architecture but there is also a very interesting love story behind these beautiful walls.

The story of the Rambha and the king. The king and Rambha would be on opposite sides of a wall they would discuss in the upper gallery. The king asked Rambha does she love him Rambha the dancer, replies yes I love you.

If you love me Rambha would you jump down from the gallery?

I will jump if you count to three. The king counted to three in jest. Rambha listened to this and jumps down the gallery.

The king sprints downstairs Rambha is laying inside she speaks her last wish. If you want to bury me, bury me but I will have the place by your side instead of your wife.

People will tell you various stories they are difficult to believe. How true Raju the guide's, story is. How true the folklore is and how historic it is.

Whether this story is right or wrong another dimension is added to the monument when you go to the structure speak in a soft voice Whisper relive the moments which belong to eternal love.

I believe if it hadn't been built in the South and built somewhere in North India people would visit it instead of the Taj Mahal because like the Taj Mahal is one of its kind Gol Gumbaz of Bijapur too might be one of its kind in the world.

A mausoleum where many stories reside some which represent the Deccan culture some are romantic.

The unrivaled monument has forced People all over the world to say OMG.
  • Mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah built-in 1656.
  • It is a pillarless structure supported by interlocking technology.
  • Famous for its whispering Gallery.
