Typewriter Artist

We hear the tapping of typewriters outside courts and in government offices, even today!
Typewriters are mostly used for such official documentation work only.

But do you know it is also a way to explore creativity?

let's meet a unique artist in Mumbai

This is Uday Talwalkar he's not a novelist or a writer.
He's age is 59 years.

Mastered the art of creating portraits on his typewriter without any formal training.
He makes amazing real-looking and super portraits on a typewriter!

He is a world-Record holder Typewriter Artist.

In 1976, Udayji had a typewriting job and he did not have a clue then that he would become world-famous for his creativity.

In Doordarshan, there was a typewriter artist and he was making a picture on his typewriter. So Udayji thought even he is using a typewriter for so many years, so he should also try doing it.

He got a picture of Smita Patil he traced it and put it in the typewriter to see how it comes out. Sp first he started with dots, dots or other signs. A daily newspaper used to come in those days, so he took it there and the next day in the morning when it got published, he thought "Wow, very good!

His first photo itself was published in a newspaper which gave Udayji courage and his creativity got a boost but as beautiful the art is to look ar, the process of making it is as difficult.

Firstly, the paper is divided into grids then photos are sketched on it with a pencil focusing on the part that comes in each box, the portrait is finished slowly and gradually.

Udayji earlier made use if only dashes and commas but later on he started using letters.
He uses the letter 'm' for shading which when overlapped gives a dark shade and for lighter shades,
the letter 'i' is used.

Now his technique has evolved so much that he makes are out of names.

You can't erase anything here after a stroke is made, you can't go back and erase it. If you try to erase it, it will get spoiled that's why it's very difficult.

Making eyes and showing the smile is very difficult

Here for eyes, he use's "equal to" sign. For the smile, he uses the letter "i" to show teeth. The stroke has to be perfect otherwise it gets spoiled if it is slightly here and there.

Udayji made a 22*13 feet portrait of Lata Mangeshkar in Moscow and made a world
record it took a total of 236 hours to make this.

Everyone whose portrait Udayji has made is left speechless that includes Balasheb Thackeray, Dalai Lama, Lata Mangeshkar, Madhuri Dixit, God of cricket- Sachin and superstar of the millennium, Amitabh Bachchan.

The maker of the typewriter would have never thought that his machine made for writing would be used for making art.

Udayji types the letters on a typewriter in such a way, that it becomes a unique art.
